Digital time capsules

Make a digital time capsule

A digital time capsule is a message sealed now and opened later — letters, photos and videos, delivered on the day you choose. On SealedIn, it's free.

What is a digital time capsule?

It's the same idea as a box in the ground, without the box. You gather what you want to keep for later — words, pictures, a video of your voice — and seal it until a date you set. When the day comes, it's delivered to the people you chose, and they open it online.

On SealedIn, each time capsule is called an envelope.

What to put in it

  • A letter about life right now: what you're worried about, what you hope for.
  • Photos of the ordinary things that won't look ordinary in ten years.
  • A video: your face, your voice, your house, the view from the window.
  • Questions for the person opening it to answer.

Ideas for every occasion

Who people make them for

Digital or a box in the loft?

A physical time capsule is lovely, and if you'll be there to dig it up, it works. A digital one is different in a few ways:

  • It arrives on its own. No one has to remember where it is or when to open it.
  • It can go to several people, wherever they live.
  • It can hold video and sound, which a box can't play back.
  • It can open at a particular minute, not just “some day”.

What a box has that we don't: you can hold it. Some people do both.

How long can it wait?

A free envelope can be sealed for up to 3 years. A Premium envelope, a one-off £4.99, can wait up to 25 years.
